How to Remove Wallpaper

The type of wallpaper you have will determine how you begin the wallpaper removal process.

Project Steps:

Step 1 - Test the Wallpaper

GO to a seam or an edge of the wallpaper & try to peel it off.

If the wallpaper won't come off or only tears in small strips, your project steps are:

  • Score the Wallpaper
  • Apply the Wallpaper Stripper
  • Scrape off the Wallpaper
  • Scrape or wash off the Old Glue

IF the vinyl front of the wallpaper pulls off and leaves a paperbacking your project steps are:

  • Remove the Vinyl Front
  • Apply the Wallpaper Stripper
  • Scrape off the Wallpaper Backing
  • Scrape or wash off the Old Glue

IF the wallpaper pulls off and leaves only the glue on the wall, your projects steps are:

  • Remove the Vinyl Wallpaper
  • Apply the wall paper stripper
  • Scrape or wash off the Old Glue

  • Step 2 - Score the Wallpaper

The secret to removing wallpaper that cannot be easily pulled off the wall is to loosen the glue behind the wallpaper with a PaperTiger.

  • Begin by perforating the wallpaper with a PaperTiger Wallpaper Scoring Tool. The holes created allow DIF wallpaper stripper to penetrate through the wallpaper to attack the glue bonding the wallpaper to the wall. PaperTiger is easy to use and it leaves thousands of tiny perforations in its path.

The more holes that you make, the faster the removal process will be. Only light pressure is needed.

Step 3 - Apply One of the DIF Wallpaper Strippers

DIF Wallpaper Strippers are specially formulated to penetrate wallpaper and breakdown old wallpaper glue faster and more efficiently than plain water or home-brewed solutions like vinegar and water or by using heavy, dangerous steamers.

The choice is either a non-drip gel or an economical liquid concentrate. DIF Ready-to-use wallpaper stripper gel stays wet for a long, effective soaking and is easy to apply with a brush or roller. Economical DIF liquid concentrate, when mixed with water, forms an effective solution that works quickly and easily.

DIF Ready to Use GEL is a non-drip crystal blue gel that clings to the wall and is safe to use. There's no odor and no need to wear gloves.

DIF Liquid Concentrate is a unique blend of patented enzymes and wetting agents. A 22oz. bottle makes enough stripper to remove the wallpaper from a typical large room (12' x 24'). A gallon container is enough to do a whole house.

  • Apply the Stripper

  • After mixing the concentrate with warm water or pouring the gel into a roller tray, start at the top of the wall, working your way down.

  • It is best to do one wall or a section of a wall at a time. Follow the directions on the DIF container.

The most important thing you can do is to allow enough time for the wallpaper stripper to work. It's time to begin removing the wallpaper when the wallpaper is turning a dark color or if it's starting to bubble.

  • Step 4 - Remove the Wallpaper and Clean off the Old Glue

Pull off the loosened paper, or use the Paper Scraper to assist in scraping off stubborn areas. (Razor knives are prone to cause damage to the walls.)
Paper Scraper Wallpaper Remover and Wall Scraper scrapes off loose, stubbon sections of wallpaper without the risk of wall damage. It won't cut into your finger and it won't tire out your arm.

After the walls are clean, you can use the Paper Scraper to scrape the wall surfaces to remove high points and old paint drips in preparation for wallpapering or priming.

To remove the old glue, just reapply the DIF Wallpaper stripper, allow 15 to 20 miutes for the stripper to work. Scrape glue residue with Paper Scraper or wash it off with a wet sponge. Rinse the walls with clean water and a sponge.

    Step 5 - Congratulations! You're all finished!

To make your wallpaper redecorating project easier the next time, use SHIELDZ Wallcovering Primer for easier hanging and easier removal.

    How to Measure Wallpaper

    Project Steps:

Step 1 - How To Measure Wallpaper

    • Measure the entire distance around the room in feet.
    • Multiply the distance by the height of the walls to be covered.
    • This gives you the total square footage of wall area to be covered.
    • Divide this number by 56 if the wallpaper is a European roll or divide this number by 70 if this is an American roll. (This information can be found in the wallpaper sample book.) This gives you the number of double rolls needed.

Step 2 - How to Measure Borders

    • Most borders are sold in 15-linear foot packages. Refer to the wallpaper book for exact measurements.

Create the Perfect Surface for Hanging Wallpaper

    Project Steps:

    Step 1 - Surface Preparation

Surface Preparation is the most important step for a long lasting wallpaper job. Prior to hanging wallpaper make sure the wall surfaces is
    • Clean: Wash the walls with ammonia and water if needed.
    • Dry: Allow for the walls to dry if washed or if wallpaper was removed from them.
    • Sound: Be sure walls aren't cracked, dusty, crumbling or have loose paint on them. If there is dust from wall repair, wipe the walls with a damp cloth to remove the dust. Scrape off loose paint, smooth irregular surfaces with patching compound and sand smooth.
    • Smooth: Remove any high points or old paint drips on the wall so they don't make bumps under the wallpaper. An easy way to get the walls perfectly smooth is to use the Paper ScraperTool. It will easily scrape off the drips and bumps without damaging the wall surface. Of course it can be used to remove subborn wallpaper

    Step 2 - Prime With SHIELDZ®

    • Makes wallpaper removal easier when it's time to redecorate- protects the drywall from damage.

    Tips for Hanging Prepasted Wallpaper

    Project Description:
Although hanging wallpaper can be messy and frustrating, the end results are worth the effort. Nothing like wallpaper can add such beauty, style, character and warmth to a room and home. Prepasted wallpaper dominates the market today, but paperhanging still isn’t an easy job. Paste is applied by the manufacturer to the backside of the wallpaper requiring only moistening to prepare the paper for installation. The problem is that moistening the paste is not easy to accomplish and does not necessarily guarantee good adhesion. To guarantee good adhesion you must prepare the wall properly before hanging. This, along with a few other tricks of the trade, can make hanging prepasted paper easier, less messy, and less frustrating. Try the following tips:

    Project Steps:

Step 1 - Prepare the Walls with a Universal Wallcovering Primer

Wallpaper needs to be hung over a sound, stable surface that’s ready to accept the adhesive on the back of the paper. Prepasted papers and borders won't adhere properly to slick, glossy-painted walls. Porous surfaces like cured plaster and new wallboard can suck up too much of the paste, causing poor adhesion. And the stress created by the wallcovering's drying and shrinkage can cause poorly adhering paints underneath to give way--especially inexpensive builder's flat paint often found in new construction. To promote bonding on these and other types of surfaces, you should prepare the walls with a universal wallcovering primer. Zinsser makes a primer called “SHIELDZ®” that promotes bonding and prepares many types of surfaces for hanging wallpaper. It's applied just like paint with a brush or roller. There’s no need to sand glossy surfaces or apply an oil-based primer to seal the wall. And there's no need to apply a “sizing” compound. SHIELDZ primes, seals and sizes in one coat, and it “gives slip,” creating just the right surface so that the wallpaper can be easily positioned and adjusted without tearing or stretching the paper. Moreover, the primer creates a uniform surface to which the paste locks on, so edges are held down and seams stay tightly butted.

Step 2 - Use a Prepaste Activator Instead of a Water Tray

Prepaste activators, which are rather new to the market, are applied to the back of prepasted paper with a brush or paint roller. They eliminate the need for a water tray. The solution thoroughly and more reliably activates the adhesive on the back of the paper and adds “grip,” increasing the holding power of the adhesive. This helps hold seams tight and reduces edge-curling and other adhesion problems. Zinsser’s “SURE-GRIP®” adhesive activator is a handy super-concentrated powder. It mixes easily with water and comes in a two-chambered packet that makes either one or two gallons—enough to hang 18 to 20 single rolls of pre-pasted wallpaper. Using a prepaste activator will give you great results without the mess and risks associated with water trays.
